The flowchart goes over each part of the editing process most traditional publications follow.
According to Lisa Poisso, "If a publishing company that’s banking its profits on producing quality books goes through all of these steps, a self-publisher with a personal stake in their product should probably consider the benefits of replicating that process."
Even though it is difficult and expensive for a self-publisher to follow every step of this flowchart it adds more opportunities for feedback, more opportunities to check specific elements in the book and more opportunities for a fresh look.
Writers, experienced or otherwise, especially when self-publishing must be careful to follow each step of the publishing process.
The completion of the manuscript (the first draft) is only the beginning of this process. The next steps involve taking time away from the manuscript, coming back to it with a fresh perspective, revising it, having a trusted family member, friend or acquaintance to read it and give their honest feedback, revising it again, getting alpha and beta readers on board, revising the manuscript again to ensure your plot and story is looked at from every angle and then and only then send it out for editing, typesetting, formatting and the last and most anticipated step—publication.
