Why do you want to become an author?

Most writers who want to write and publish their books, dream of becoming bestselling authors.

Rolling our eyes, are we? Don't you dream of the same thing, you scoff!

Yes, I do, but that's not why I wrote my first novel or even my first article.

All I wanted to was share a story, a story I had lived with for many years before I put it down on paper.

So, yes, like everyone else, I would love it if readers loved my book and made it a bestseller. To have it fly off the shelves, earn critical acclaim, and maybe, just maybe, gets adapted into a blockbuster film.

But how many of the millions of books that are written actually make it there? How many writers achieve that elusive fame, fortune, and recognition?

The truth is, very few.

Yet, if you ask me why anyone should write, I won’t tell you it’s for fame or money.

I’ll tell you to write because you love it. Because words feel like home. Because stories burn inside you, waiting to escape. Until that love for writing shines through your pages, your book is just another title on a shelf.

I’ve read many books that haven’t topped the charts but have left me with unforgettable characters and moments that linger like a sweet aftertaste. And there are some highly praised books I’ve set aside because I didn’t like them.

If you are planning to become an author, set your goals first. If you want to turn writing into a business, go ahead, there's nothing wrong in doing that—but remember there’s a method to it. Many have worked hard at it and cracked the formula.

Yep! There sure is a formula, a method...stop it with the eye-roll and the cackling, will you?

Oh, yeah, back to why you should write!

Write because you say you love to write; write because you have a story that burns inside you; and then do it without any expectations. Don’t obsess over accolades or rankings. Trust that somewhere, someone will pick up your book and fall in love with it.

In the end, your words will find the right heart. Isn’t that enough reason to start?
